Welcome Jamie and Steve!  I’m so glad you are joining me for this special episode!  How are you doing?  So in honor of the Wednesday PackADay podcast, what’s your go to stress food? 


JAMIE:

Stress eating is supposed to be unhealthy but hey! It’s healthy for the mind, no?  


JAMIE:

In all seriousness, Jamie has been offering daily mental health tips on her social media channels and Steve always reminds people that his DMs are always open if you are struggling.  I’d love if you could tell the audience about your motivations behind those very special things you personally offer to others.  


JAMIE: (what made you start offering daily mental health vid tips AND keeps you going with them)

I have really been looking forward to chatting with both of you because you have super positive messages about mental health, and quite frankly everyone can benefit from a frank discussion about this, so before we get into it, I’d like to ask you both to give a brief overview of what makes you prioritize YOUR mental health how you became advocates (bc I consider you both ADVOCATES FOR MENTAL HEALTH).  Jamie?


JAMIE:

I’m so interested in having this chat especially because we are part of a larger online community.  How do you practice healthy habits in dealing with folks online?  Any different than in person? 


JAMIE:

I personally turn to the arts and spirituality as a way to keep myself together and to find peace.  Also exercise - walks, runs, etc. Do you have any go-tos or outlets for when you need to express yourself or find balance in your life?  


JAMIE:

How do you define mental health? What does mental healthiness look like in your life?


JAMIE:

Is it a goal or is it more a process? I ask this because like anything, I feel like people can pressure themselves to achieve something, which in turns causes stress. Stress is part of life and it doesn’t mean we’re not healthy or normal if we FEEL stressed, so how do you personally find the balance bc we really do live in a stressful world. 


JAMIE:

From time to time I put up Art Challenges on Instagram and Facebook, but I think I will offer on Twitter in the future.  I am always touched by how those who join in appreciate the art break bc they are dealing with stress, often hidden stresses. And in honor of our weekly superlatives, I will offer a musical superlative: for music therapy

The Fundamental Expression of Human Emotions, Lionel Yu - YouTube

Lionel Yu is a pianist who made his name on YouTube and has become acclaimed in all the traditional channels. His music in particular is emotive and emotionally out there.  I find it very moving.  For me personally, my feelings can get bottled up so listening to his music feels like a cleanse or a flush. I’m a huge fan of this genius. That’s this week’s superlative.

Final question (bc I think others can really benefit by knowing they are not alone in experiencing challenge) what is the most difficult thing you have had to deal with mentally (it can be a single event or something that tends to push your buttons regularly)?  


JAMIE:
